Establishing and Growing a Company

Some inventions form the basis of a viable company.  Bio Innovation SA can assist inventors to establish companies to commercialise technologies or provide an industry service helping start-up or early stage companies to grow and expand their operations. This section details Bio Innovation SA’s expertise in business development and provides information on accessing advice and financial assistance.

In many cases scientists are responsible for setting up companies to commercialise their own discoveries. If that is the case, here are some issues to consider:

  • Commercial strategy
  • Company structure and constitution
  • Business plan
  • Marketing plan
  • IP status and ownership
  • Management (both operational and board)
  • Human resources
  • Infrastructure/facilities
  • Funding requirements
  • Company and technology valuation models

Bio Innovation SA Capabilities

Bio Innovation SA is dedicated to the establishment and growth of new South Australian bioscience companies. Many technologies are best commercialised through a company structure, and the knowledge-economy benefits to South Australia represent an attractive return on investment. Bio Innovation SA has strong links with State and Federal business mentoring programs, has direct experience with most funding schemes and seed capital providers (including AusIndustry), and can assist companies to obtain institutional venture capital financing where appropriate.

Bio Innovation SA Conditional Grants

The Bio Innovation SA Business Development Initiative (BDI) is available to assist entrepreneurs and scientists establish their own companies. Eligible expenditure includes such items as incorporation costs, legal and accountancy fees, small-scale manufacture, office fit-out etc.

Funding through the Business Development Initiative is also open to companies who can demonstrate that funding would make a significant difference to their growth and net worth.
