Floria Biosystems is developing fluorescent lateral flow in-vitro diagnostic tests using a portable time-resolved fluorescence test strip reading system, capable of reading lateral flow diagnostics.
The system is a compact, low cost device that operates as a platform solution for a range of infectious disease assays. This approach, in combination with fluorescent test strips offers the capability to achieve several orders of magnitude improvement in diagnostic performance attainable from current commercial Lateral Flow test strips.
The major technology breakthrough being progressed by Floria will enable clinicians in developed countries to obtain diagnosis of infection during a patient consultation, rather than sending patients away for off-site pathology testing followed by a (later) return visit to the clinician to obtain a prescription. This results in substantially reduced health care costs, faster treatment of infectious diseases (with better health outcomes for the patient), reduced risk of spreading infection to the patient’s community, and lowered patient anxiety.
It is also expected that in developing countries (without access to pathology testing infrastructure) the Floria technology could fulfill a vital need as a front line diagnostic tool suitable for remote locations
